Pops’ Costa Rica Travel Guide, Toad Hall

On a trip this year to Costa Rica with my son we started in La Fortuna to see the Arenal volcano. One of the days we had planned on repelling but when we got up the weather was bad and it was pouring rain. We decided instead to drive around Lake Arenal.

As soon as we left La Fortuna we started seeing homemade signs all over the roadside. “See the world famous Toad Hall”, “Toad Hall has the world’s best Bloody Mary’s”, “Toad Hall has the best tacos”. After miles of reading these signs we decided that we had to stop and check out Toad Hall.

Toad Hall is a small hotel with a gift shop, bar and restaurant on Lake Arenal. We met the owner who is an expat that bought the hotel and created Toad Hall. He is referred to as Mr. Toad a name he never pictured himself as having.

We both had the Bloody Mary and I have to admit it was the best Bloody Mary I have had in my life. The secret was the rim of the glass had seasoned pepper instead of salt. The drink also had homemade pickled vegies. Toad Hall is on a hill and from the bar your view is looking down on the lake. We didn’t eat there but if the food is as good as the Bloody Mary then he can support his claim.

If you are around the Arenal volcano I would highly recommend taking a drive to Toad Hall. The view is beautiful, it is a very unique spot, and the owner is available and very friendly. Have a drink, relax and enjoy the view.
