Amador County Wine Trip

Living in Sacramento we have the best kept secret when it comes to wine regions in California. Less than an hour away are the rolling hills of the Sierra foothills and some of the best wine in California. Going to Amador County is like going to Napa 30 years ago. The crowds are small and most wineries don't charge for tasting. My favorite Amador wines are Zinfandel and Syrah.

This trip was for the guys only. Me, my son, son-in-law and grandson went up to pick up our wine clubs for the month and to also take my grandson on his first wine trip this weekend. He is almost seven months old and it was about time. This trip we only hit the wineries where we belong to the wine club but we usually try to go to as many as possible. This trip it was Dillian, Coopers and Villa Toscano.

What a perfect day! A cold front had gone through the night before and there was a light dusting of snow. How often do you go to a winery and meet the owner? We were able to meet the owner at Dillian. We tasted some great wines, had lunch at Villa Toscano and initiated Colin into the wine tasting group.

This will be one of many trips for Colin. Next time you are in Sacramento for business or pleasure make it a point to see the foothill wine country. We went to Amador but there are other areas such as Fairplay, Apple Hill and newer wineries in Placer county.
