On one of our trips driving between the relatives in Italy
and Denmark we decided to stay a few days in Munich. I had been there before
but for only one night and we stayed on the outer ring of the city. This time
we stayed at the Marriott Courtyard in downtown Munich. The hotel had an
underground, secure parking garage with large modern rooms. The location was
perfect as it was only a few blocks from the city center.
At the center of the city is the Marienplatz—a large open square named after the Mariensäule, a Marian column in its center—with the Old and the New Town Hall. Its tower contains the Rathhaus-Glockenspiel. Three gates of the demolished medieval fortification have survived to this day—the Isartor in the east, the Sendlinger Tor in the south and the Karlstor in the west of the inner city. The Karlstor leads up to the Stachus, a grand square dominated by the Justizpalast (Palace of Justice) and a fountain. The Frauenkirche is the most famous building in the city center and serves as the cathedral for the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising.
This is also where you can find the famous beer houses of Germany. We stopped for a beer in the Hofbrauhaus. If you are into beer drinking then this is the place for German beer. It was up there with going to the Guinness Store house.
There are restaurants everywhere. We found one in a back alley that was built in 1649. We sat outside and had Nuremburg Sausages, Sauerkraut, Weiner Schnitzel and beer.
This year I am planning on going back but this time it will be for Oktoberfest in September.
