In my last post I talked about a short trip to Oslo, Norway from
Copenhagen. Now I would like to talk about and even shorter day trip you can
make to Malmo, Sweden from Copenhagen.
The Øresund
Bridge is a fairly new bridge taking you from Copenhagen to Sweden. The bridge
is unique as it starts on the Copenhagen side as a tunnel under the channel and
pops up on a man-made island in the channel where you will elevate onto a
bridge for the rest of the ride to Sweden. You can either drive across or take
the train from Copenhagen to Malmo. I have done both. You can catch the train
at the central station in Copenhagen or even at the airport. It will take you
to the central station in Malmo. Since the drive or train is very short, maybe
a half hour, it is perfect for a day trip to another country.
Malmo is a beautiful city in Sweden with canals like you see in
Copenhagen. The central part of the city is in walking distance from the train
station. Enjoy the walk to the city center with its huge square. Around the
square you will find stone and brick building typical of the time. Inside the
square is an outdoor market to buy fresh produce. Also, at certain times you may
find street entertainment. My first trip there I was surprised to find American
Indians performing there. Off of the main square are streets where there is
abundant shopping and restaurants. Take a stroll down the streets and check out
the many shops featuring Swedish products like crystal. You can eat in one of the
many restaurants or if the weather is nice grab something from a street vendor
and sit along the canal. If you have a car and feel like it there is also Viking
history south of Malmo. Foteviken Viking Museum
is an authentic working Viking-style village comprising houses, workshops, a
sacrificial temple and shipyard. There is also a Viking fortress nearby for
those interested in more Viking history. If you go to the fort plan for at
least 4 hours of driving there and back and touring the site. You can still do
both the fort and Malmo in one day. After
a full day of shopping, sightseeing and eating you will still be back in
Copenhagen in time to have a night on the town.
One thing to note: Although the Danish and Swedish Kroner look the
same Danish Kroner is not accepted in Sweden and Swedish Kroner is not accepted
in Denmark. The first time you may find that out is if you drive and need to
pay for parking. Otherwise exchange some money at the money changer.
