Now that I’ve talked about side trips from Copenhagen I want
to talk about Copenhagen itself, my favorite city in Europe.
Denmark is consistently ranked as one of the happiest
countries in the world. You have to go there to understand why. They pay a high
tax but with that tax they don’t have to worry about education, health care,
retirement and elder care. If they qualify for a university, that is paid for. Everyone
in Denmark is entitled to a roof over their head. You take away those worries
and what’s left is time to enjoy life.
Copenhagen is a beautiful city with a rich history. When you
think of Denmark you think of Copenhagen. People ride bikes everywhere and the
city is perfect for walking or biking. You will see people outside enjoying the
city at any time of the year. I’ve been there in December and March with snow
on the ground and have fond memories of the little children in one piece snow
suits out with their parents enjoying the city day and night. The days are
short in the winter but that doesn’t stop them from going out. When summer
comes the city squares, streets, beaches and parks fill up with people enjoying
warm sunlight that lasts well into the evening. As short as the winter days are
the summer days are even longer.
The city is divided into distinct areas and in the rest of series
on Copenhagen I will talk specifically about different aspects and sites of the
city.
