This
weekend I watched Red Bull race to another victory. It got me thinking of how I
became a fan of Formula One. As I was growing up, ESPN didn’t exist and
watching sports was limited to what you could get on your local channel. One
thing I watched every Saturday was Wide World of Sports. I can remember every
year in May they covered the Monaco Grand Prix. There was the race running
through the streets of Monte Carlo with the tunnel and chicane but there were
also the yachts, casino, luxury cars, royalty and celebrities. I became a fan
of Formula One Racing but also a fan of Monaco. In 2010 I was able to go to my
first Formula One race in Monaco. It ended up being more than I expected. I had
been to Monaco before but race day had a totally different atmosphere. I was
still able to sit at café before the races and enjoy a croissant and espresso
and have a glass of wine and a bite to eat between races. What I didn’t know
was that there are actually three races that day; (Porsche and GP2) are before
the Grand Prix. That makes it an exciting full day. I also was able to see from
my seats people like Mick Jagger, Michael Douglas, and Richard Branson to name
a few. After the race we sat outside with a glass of Pernod and reflected on
the day.
Before
and after the race day there are other sites to visit like the Italian Riviera,
Nice, wine regions , etc. The 2013 season is winding down but it is not to early to plan for the 2014 season. Why not combine Formula One with a trip to an exotic location. Formula One races in locations like Monaco, Italy, Spain, Australia, China, Singapore, Brazil or more local in the US and Canada. For more information on the season visit www.formula1.com .
We all have our own
Monaco, a place we have dreamed of seeing. It is easier than you think.
